cause life is too short and our fights are too long baby
there’s a cold wind blowin’ thru you and me
like a broken old dictaphone
I seem to record your little speeches all wrong now
if this is love then please let me be
I can’t recall what you said last night
but it’s alright with me if you need to be right
it was dark, I was drunk, and the dog tripped me
But I guess time is a river that rolls to the sea
and the sea is a sky for the stars in the trees
and the stars are just falling thru time
and time is all in your mind
I saw your boy down on the avenue
walkin’ round down and lost in his bowling shoes
I heard you left him standin’ at the parade
Now he wanders out in the rain
without an umbrella lookin’ so insane
why don’t you call he’s been fallin’
ever since you cut that leash
that little bird’s been flyin’ in your sights
but he broke his neck on your window last night dear
so come on and bring it on home to me
cause time be a river that rollls to the sea
and the sea is reflecting the stars on their knees
and the stars are just fallin’ thru time
and time is all in your mind
I ask myself now if dogs could fly
would I take your picture from a purple sky
would I frame it, would I put it on my wall for all to see
Well maybe I could and maybe I won’t and maybe
I just can’t and maybe I don’t understand anything
but I know you and me we were meant to be
cause time is a river that rolls to the sea
and the sea is reflecting the stars on their knees
and the stars are just howlin’ in the wind child
and the wind is blowin’ thru them trees

now my devil’s back again
he’s gonna tell me where it’s at
says you look sad
but I understand
all these things that you lack
now I’m tripping up the stairs again
I’m in the corner drunk and stuttering
backslidin’ since I don’t know when
but things are just the way they is
not the way they’re supposed to be
he promised that he’d dance with me
then he stole them shoes right off of my feet have mercy
on second street
he picked a fight with me again
called me a goddamned sinner
he stole my car
crashed it into the bar, then he called you
and claimed it wouldn’t start
he’s got me hocking everything I own
I’m hangin’ on your telephone
I’m holdin’ up the grocery store
but things are just the way they is
not the way they’re supposed to be
he promised that he’d dance with me
then he stole them shoes right off of my feet have mercy

and your skies gone black
and there ain’t no house up on that hill
and the choice you once had
you can’t get back
and you’re running you’re running standing still
don’t come crying to me
because I’m already there
swinging like a monkey in a tree
these wicked little tricks that you play
they’ll come back to haunt you again
how you sow so shall you reap
these things that you hold now you just can’t keep
don’t come crying to me
because I’m already there
swinging like a monkey in a tree
I thought I saw Joe Hill last night
he was alive just like you and me
I thought you died to Joe says I
no I did not die says he
don’t come crying to me

from way cross town
full of confusion
she says I’m down baby
she says
just because the sun it shines
you know it makes me wonder why
I’m lying here just staring at the ceiling
without you
this dirty truth is killing me
these broken letters coming from across town
they say I’m gonna leave here one of these days
just because the sun it shines

love won’t you come around
faith ain’t got nothing on this town
I said love won’t you come around
love won’t you take this ride
love won’t you take this ride
three dark angels circle the sky
I said love won’t you take this ride
wind in your head
and dust in your mouth
strange birds in your eyes
kill the lights and let’s find out
how your madness runs with mine
love won’t you stick around
love won’t you stick around
I’m broke and blind
and I can’t be found
I said love won’t you stick around

through a foggy haze
these lucky breaks we count on
all unlucky days
holding up this roof
standing in the door
proof and eyes for only you
papers fall on to the floor
and it might break
but it could take
a lifetime
for the grace
to leave this place
like a wave
in the ocean
well talk is cheap
and blood is free
and you’re a kid for now
but you ain’t me and you might see
that it could break
but it might take
a lifetime
for the grace
to leave this place
like a wave
in the ocean

Juanita was lyin’ in the river bed
God slapped the moon on a harvest rain
the roosters flew and a crow shouted her name
Juanita
nine months later she had herself a son
when asked who the father was she whispered no one
town folk shunned her they thought she lied
they didn’t even bury her on the day she died
Juanita
the boy had no name but he grew up just the same
in a shack by the side of the road
a real strange angel with a real sharp tongue
and a great sense of diction for someone so young
oh the wind and the snow and the rain
don’t mean nothin’ to a boy on a train
whoa the wind and the rain and the snow
don’t mean nothin’ to a boy on his own
he went to work and he been to school
shipped off to war to fight for them fools
and down in the jungle in ’72
under enemy fire his company flew
they left him standing in a river of red
they left him alone they left him for dead
but five years later he showed up in town
bought that old shackon the hill fallin’ down
and some say he’s gone and some say they’ve seen
shadows at night and a halo of rings
he’s there on the banks when the creek starts to ris
ehe’s there in your bed when she’s telling you lies
he’s out on a ledge back in ’39
he was back there in Salem when the flames started flyin’
oh the wind and the snow and the rain
don’t mean nothin’ to a boy on a train
whoa the wind and the rain and the snow
don’t mean nothin’ to a boy on his own

she fell down with the powder on her face
woke up in flames on Avenue A
took up a collection and cleaned the whole plate off
she came down on a Tuesday night
fell off the roof and caught up in a fight
but she never took a bribe and she always had a light
she’s like a thunderbird on the turnpike
she took all the trophies from her momma’s purse
traded em in on a joker in a hearse
but she never let me drive
and I always got nursed

they’ll be hanging the prophet like they always do
if you don’t see me I’ll be seeing you
if walls are thin then the wind whips right thru
and time is all that’s left in the ruins
so if you need to go I understand
cause we spent everything
and now we got nothing
just like we was before we had something
your mind is gone
like a rose in the fall
you’re freezing and tired
all your tales so tall
now your daughter’s in line
like your momma before
with her pills and promises
outside the door
what love disregards
Gideon sweeps off the floor
I’ll take my chances
you never know
we’ve got to grow up
before we’re too old
I’ll take what I need
and nothing more
cause we spent everything
and now we got nothing
just like we was before we had something
you’re always around
but you’re never at home
someone’s at the door
you won’t answer that phone
